TRIP – The Dreamtime Remixes – KTB14CD

Steve Dixon – Vocals

Hayley Windsor – Vocals

Brian Moss – Programming

Formed in 1987, DFA have steadily worked underground both in the UK and Europe and are now signed to DREAMTIME. Their four singles and two albums have all charted in the NME national independent charts and press acclaim has been widespread.

Steve Dixon (vocals, lyrics, breaks) cut his musical teeth in an art school band that included fellow students Marc Almond and Fad Gadget in the line up. He has also worked with Oakland/ San Francisco industrial death techno act GGFH, and remixed tracks for doom metallers My Dying Bride. He has also recorded vocals in Detroit for both John Penn of Q-Bik Muse, and original Plus 8 Detroit techno star Kenny Larkin.

Brian Moss (keyboards, programming) worked extensively with early Soft Cell both in the studio and live. As one half of Vicious Pink Phenomena he co-wrote and released three classic old school high-energy New York dance floor hits, ‘Can’t You See’, ‘8.15 to Nowhere/ Space Ship Over There’ and ‘Fetish’.

DFA’s current line up also includes newcomer, nineteen years old Hayley Windsor (vocals). Paul Bird (guitar) came back to the line up after a two-year layoff, to contribute to the bands second album for Dreamtime entitled ‘NARCOTICA: THE NEW PORNOGRAPHY’

NARCOTICA seeps in with two long hypnotic tracks by their keyboard player/ programmer Brian Moss, showing a return to their original musical inspiration and influence – hard edge electro duo, Suicide. Contemporary dance genres, Trip Hop and Dance dub become evident as Narcotica begins to take hold. The band were truly ahead of their time with the concept of drugs as sex, with many glossies, such as Cosmopolitan running features on drugs as the sexual crutch of the nineties.

Deconstructed from verse written by vocalist Steve Dixon, the new DFA lyrics represent observations on the nature of addiction – emotional, social and narcotic. Steve says: “Things seem heavier now, and so we have returned to our old skool electro roots and made a claustrophobic album for the Blank Post E Generation, who are now waking up to the fact that real love does not come in tablet form”.

‘NARCOTICA’ was released on 31st July through DREAMTIME

NEWS UPDATE 06/06/96

FREESTYLE DFA.

DFA have recently re signed to Dreamtime/Music For Nations for a further two album deal are currently working on their next CD.

Band member Steve said,

“This time round the sound will be far more free style. No songs, dub, trance or much acoustic stuff, just deep core radical programming and engineering.

“Being linked to Music For Nations means we have had the financial backing to set up our own studio and spend more time getting into the technology.”

Over the last year DFA have been gigging in Holland and Belgium where their main fan base exists.

Steve continued,

“We play things like the Gonzo Circus events, and venues in Brussells, Gent and Amsterdam which is a nice place to chill at the end of tours, it ’s big fun. Also the audiences are more open. We do gigs with bands like Banco De Gaia and Autechre in Europe. In the UK we have been more on a dub tip, recently we did Middlesbrough Arena with Zion Train. Also one of our tracks is currently being used on an MTV Europe advertisement,…….which is nice.”

Though their Music For Nations deal only allows for CD releases DFA will also have vinyl out via Resource Records.

Brian who does the hands on programming explains,

“We have done a mix of a new track ‘Freestyle’, there will be three other mixes of ‘Freestyle’ on the 12 inch. The Finsbury Street crew are to work on it, John Dalby and Tim from Germ who are on GPR, plus Steve Cooper and RMD.”

Though DFA are established in Europe, Steve went over to New York to meet with distributors Futurist/Mechanic and found them to be very sympathetic to DFA’s cause, and the band hope to have product out in America in the future.

Third band member Hayley Windsor now has a place at Leeds College of Music. She works with Brian as studio technician as well as adding vocals.

Hayley said,

“I am currently working with an Akai S3000XL sampler. At Beaumont Street Studios they have a SADIE digital disk editor which was a great tool for removing glitches on vocals and remixing tracks.

I’m really excited as I ‘m soon getting a Roland JV 1080 which will expand my collection of equipment.”

Finally DFA say,

“We are still deep core but now much more free style. Watch this space for news of the next DFA album.”
